Ensemble of soloists "Orpharion"
The ensemble of soloists "Orpharion" was created in 1991 by flutist and conductor Oleg Khudyakov. For more than 25 years of its history the ensemble performed about 200 different concert programs.
The performances of the ensemble are interesting not only for the regulars of the Philharmonics, but for a wide range of listeners. At the Orpharion concerts, you not only enjoy the sound of classical and ancient instruments, but learn interesting historical facts about the creation of music works, the life of composers, and also get acquainted with the authentic manner of performing baroque music.
In their performances “Orpharion” uses classical as well as ancient instruments. At their concerts you can hear the live sound of the traverse flute, harpsichord, viola da gamba, lute, organ and other ancient instruments. The ensemble organically combined academic musicians, as well as performers of baroque music in an authentic manner. The repertoire of "Orpharion" includes music of the 18th and 19th centuries.
"Orpharion" took part in international festivals held in Utrecht (Netherlands), Sopron (Hungary), Rundale-Riga (Latvia), Dusseldorf (Germany) and in Moscow ("December Evenings"). The ensemble is a regular participant in the Sheremetyevo Seasons festival, which takes place every summer at the Moscow Museum-Estate Ostankino in a unique historical theater, where at the end of the 18th century were performed operas by many composers of that time including Gluck, Gretry, Salieri.
The ensemble has created a number of exclusive programs, including: "Musical Salon of Catherine the Great", "A. S. Pushkin and his contemporaries”, “It’s time for us to go to the opera soon!”, the play “The wondrous moment…”, the play “Always yours, Mozart!” (according to Mozart's correspondence with his father), a program from the works of S. I. Taneyev (on the 150th anniversary of the composer).
The name of the ensemble was given by the ancient plucked instrument orpharion, whose name comes from the names of two ancient musicians - the mythological Orpheus and Arion, an ancient Greek poet known for his art of playing the lyre. From the end of the 16th century the orpharion was used in England, France and Italy to play basso continuo. The use of plucked instruments in the basso continuo part is one of the main principles of the Orpharion ensemble.
